David Abbott; widely regarded as one of the world's greatest copywriters and Founding Partner of Abbott Mead Vickers, is making a rare return to the industry on Tuesday 30th March to be interviewed by Chairman of Chime Communications, Lord Bell. Tickets for this unmissable event include a signed copy of David's first novel The Upright Piano Player and royalties from these books, purchased from independent book sellers, are being donated to NABS by David. The IPA will also donate any surplus made from the evening.
Lord Bell is often referred to as the 'third brother' because of his central role in the success of Saatchi & Saatchi, and was one of David's peers and key competitors. So no one is better placed than him to encourage David to share his experiences and some of his best work with the audience on this special evening.
Background:
David Abbott is famous as the creator of some of the most memorable campaigns for Volkswagen whilst at DDB in the 60s; then BT, RSPCA, Sainsbury's, Seagram, The Economist, Volvo, and Yellow Pages at Abbott Mead Vickers; the agency he founded in 1979 with Peter Mead and Adrian Vickers. Abbott Mead Vickers went on to become the biggest UK agency and arguably one of the greatest. David continued to combine great creative skill with business acumen throughout this period until his retirement from the agency in 1998 two days before his 60th birthday.
Lord Bell began his career in 1959 at Colman Prentis and Varley and helped form Saatchi and Saatchi in 1970. He left in 1985, to join the Lowe Group as Deputy Chairman, and led an MBO of the communications division Lowe Belle Communications (which latterly became Chime Communications) in 1989, becoming Chairman in 1994. He has been an advisor to Thatcher, Reagan, de Klerk, and Yeltsin, as well as to leading political figures from France, Australia, Malta, Thailand, Brunei and Moscow. Tim also created and funded Comic Relief, the biggest fundraising charity in the UK.
