Sir Christopher Powell, current Chairman of NESTA and former IPA President, has been appointed to chair the two Advertising Standards Boards of Finance (Asbof and Basbof) that control the funding of the advertising industry's self-regulatory system.
Sir Christopher, who was knighted in January 2009 for services to advertising, takes over on 1st January 2010, following a prior handover period.
Formerly the chief executive of advertising agency BMP, Sir Christopher was also elected as President of the IPA, serving from 1993 -1995.
Retiring Chairman Winston Fletcher said: “Sir Christopher is a highly influential and respected adman, who remains passionate about advertising and the need to protect it through self-regulation. I am delighted he has agreed to accept this post — we are very fortunate to have got him.”
Fletcher added: “He is also widely involved outside the advertising arena, which apart from bringing him into contact with various arms of government, has enabled him to grasp swiftly the issues involved in funding self-regulation”.
Sir Christopher Powell states: “Advertising regulation in Britain is widely regarded as a model for how self-regulation should work. It has been enormously successful, and I greatly look forward to building on this success in the coming years.”

Asbof funds non-broadcast advertising regulation and Basbof funds broadcast advertising regulation, and both finance the Advertising Standards Authority, through the collection of a levy paid by advertisers, which it administers.
