I have landed my dream job on an advertising grad scheme, but now that I’ve started I’m terrified of failing or embarrassing myself. There are a few other grads that started with me and they all seem incredibly sure of themselves. How can I make sure I impress my manager and don’t let myself down?
We are all great at comparing ourselves with other people, when actually we are just as good at the very things we notice in other people. As they say, if you can spot it you’ve got it...
I would stop comparing yourself to real or imaginary behaviours in your colleagues and focus on what you can do to impress your manager whilst being authentic about who you are.
Your manager needs to know that you can do the job, can be trusted to do the job, deliver accurate work first time and can be relied upon. Please turn up to your meetings with a pad and pen – the old way I know, but how else are you going to remember everything! Organise your inbox so that you can easily retrieve information and make sure that you file documents accurately on your shared drive. Take an active interest in your client’s business; check the share price, read about them in the press, read recent case studies on their business and their competitors. Form strong relationships with as many folk across the agency as possible and show an interest.
Be a hand raiser to get involved in cross agency activities, the XMAS party is looming, can you help with that for example.
So be visible with your manager though your work, be visible across the agency, be curious, get involved and in turn build your reputation. At the end of the day your actions will speak much more loudly than words.
