At last week's sell-out IPA event over 100 industry practitioners thrashed out their thoughts, experiences and concerns about social media.

The unconventional event was chaired by James Cherkoff of Collaborate Marketing, and heard from leading practitioners: Mark Earls, consultant, Herdmeister on the big picture, Neil Perkins, Director of Marketing and Strategy, IPC on the 10 principles of 'social', and Amelia Torrode, Head of Strategy and Innovation, VCCP discussing the case study of the Compare the Meerkat 'social' campaign.

The audience then divided into nine discussion groups to debate the issues surrounding the social phenomenon including: Why are clients sceptical? What is the economic value of social media? What does social look like? Should all brands get involved? The results of which will shape the next IPA Social event.

Said Patrick Mills, IPA Director of Professional Development, "As we can see from today's tweets this event has got the industry talking. Which is precisely the aim of the event and the medium itself - it is a conversation - a noisy and opinionated one, and this is just the start of it."
