02/07/2008ARCHIVEDIPA Strategy Group Debate - Who makes better planners? Planners or creatives?

Planners aren’t planning!

There is an argument that there was a time when planners actually did some planning. Identifying the client’s business problem and working out who to talk to, and what to say in order to solve it. It was called selling, and some thought that was what planners were there to do. Not to mention showing that the work had actually worked at the end of the process.

That was before the 'brand' bug bit and, some would argue, that planners decided that they were no longer interested in using advertising to sell and became more interested in using it to provide a window on the brand’s soul and to build its ‘equity’ in people’s minds.

It is for this reason that a creative like Dave Trott, creative director of Chick Smith Trott, is currently on the warpath over the role that planners play. For him it is time planners got back to selling, in short it is time that planners started planning again.

Come and thrash out the role of the planner in today’s communications agency with the legend himself proposing the motion that planners aren’t planning anymore and David Golding, founding partner of Adam & Eve, defending the discipline.
