2000 Census figures published

The annual census of IPA membership from 2000. The Agency Census has become the definitive survey of employment trends in media, advertising and marketing communication agencies.

The 2000 IPA Agency Census, released today (26th October 2001), reveals a steady increase in the number of staff employed by IPA member companies. As of 1st September 2000, 13,508 were employed at 196 companies. This compares with 13,000 employed at 201 member companies as of 1st September 1999.

Advertising and marketing communication continues to be a young industry with 50% of all staff being under the age of 30, and 82% under the age of 40. This is constant with 1999 figures.

Staff numbers in London companies also increased to 10,451; this is up from 9,941 in 1999.  78% of staff are based in London compared with 22% based outside of London.

The 2000 IPA Census includes a new table which shows that out of the 13,508 staff total, 11,124 are employed at creative/full service agencies and 2,384 at media agencies.

It also reveals the following seven-year trends

        The average agency size has risen to 69 staff (2000) from 53 (1994)

        Secretarial staff have dropped to 6.3% (2000) from 11.6% (1994)

Women currently represent 25% of board directors (22% in 1999), 37% of all other heads of department (same), and 49% of all staff (same).
