Ad agencies offer STEM students paid internships through IPA Admission programme

Leading UK ad agencies, including Iris, Mindshare and BBH, are offering paid internships to STEM students this summer, as part of the IPA’s new Admission programme to help drive the industry’s future.

The IPA Admission Programme goes live this week and seeks top university talent to fill the new industry job roles created by big data, the growth of online advertising and social media, and a growing interest in predictive planning and performance measurements. It is part of the IPA’s three-year programme to attract diverse talent into the industry and is being run in partnership with Step, the UK’s leading organiser of paid student work placements and graduate internships.

Agencies providing the 8-10-week summer placements include BBH, Enterprise, Gyro, Iris, Karmarama, Leith, MBA, McCann, Mindshare, Mullen Lowe, Ogilvy One, Neo @ Ogilvy, Omnicom Media Group, VCCP and VML. They will be offering a variety of the following roles: Data Analysts, Programmatic Traders, Social Media Analysts, Developers, User Experience Planners and Econometricians.

Says Janet Hull, IPA Director of Marketing Strategy & Executive Director, Creative Pioneers: “For our industry to thrive we must master big data for which we need the scientifically-minded, statistically-driven, analytical brains that STEM students possess. Competition for these students from other sectors is, however, high – and even then, we estimate that only around 20% of them will also have the necessary culture fit for adland. It is therefore vital that we target the right students at the right time with the right job specification.”

Robin Kennedy, the Director of Step leading its involvement commented: “As Sir Martin Sorrell has said, rather than ‘Madmen’, today’s advertising industry needs 'Maths men’ and 'Maths women’ and we’re delighted to be helping the IPA and its member agencies find them. Companies across the UK are recognising that they need to be more creative in the war for outstanding future talent. Initiatives and internships like these not only satisfy that need but also go a long way to helping address the graduate skills gaps and ‘underemployment’ issues that we hear all too much about.”

The deadline for applications is Friday 11th March with shortlisting and interviews taking place later in the month. The placements will start in June, July and August. Further information is available on the IPA’s AdMission website or via email: ipa@step.org.uk

As part of the programme the IPA and Step visited a number of universities throughout the country, including Birmingham, Leeds, Imperial, Lancaster, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Cambridge, among others.
