Grey’s Janet Markwick to lead IPA Finance Policy Group
Bringing a broad range of agency and client experience from Sony and Coca-Cola, Janet will lead the Group’s agenda to broaden commercial understanding across the industry by empowering more people in agencies to play a role in demonstrating value to clients.
Says Janet: “I strongly believe that being both creatively outstanding and commercially successful is not a paradox. As our industry becomes more sophisticated it’s going to be essential that we embrace the need for greater clarity, make clear ROI commitments to clients and in so doing enable ourselves to truly demonstrate the real value we bring to the table.”
Janet succeeds Martin Telling, Chief Financial Officer, OMD who chaired the group for two years. During this time he oversaw the successful Performance Adaptathon in July 2014 and laid the foundations for an output-led approach to the Group’s commercially-focussed agenda.
Says Martin: “It’s been an honour to have chaired the Group over the past couple of years, a time that has coincided with Ian Priest’s Presidency and his agenda to achieve better commercial creativity, a great initiative that the Group has been able to get behind and be a real part of. I’d like to thank everyone at the IPA and the other members of the Group for the support they’ve given me as Chairman. I’m looking forward to remaining on the Group and to supporting Janet.”
The key event in the FPG calendar is the industry-wide IPA Commercial Conference which will focus on ‘Maximising value’. Building up to this will be ‘Training for Business Growth’, an invitation-only breakfast session on 26th February at the IPA.
Developed jointly by the IPA and Colin Fleming, a former FPG Chair and Chief Operating Officer, AMV BBDO, the event will explain how Continuous Professional Development contributes to demonstrable business success.
Says Colin: “With fragmentation of media and the many associated fee models there is a need for broader commercial leadership in agencies. Agencies have been forced to adapt their finance functions into commercial outfits. There is still not enough investment in growing the next generation of commercial talent. Without that investment there is a danger agencies will falter financially as the business model evolves further. The new IPA ’How to’ programme aims to give the next generation of commercial leaders a forum in which they can share and learn.”

Janet is Chief Operating Officer Grey EMEA was formerly CFO at Grey London from 2008-12. Prior to joining the agency community Janet was Finance & Operations Director, Communications, Sony Europe where she was responsible for the Marketing Communications Investment across Europe (when the famous Sony balls, paint and rainbow campaigns were created). Janet was previously Marketing Communications Director for Sony Business Europe and Head of Strategic Planning where she led a number of business transformation projects for Sony. Janet started her career at Coca Cola where she worked across manufacturing and supply chain.
