One of advertising’s most celebrated directors Frank Budgen passes away

Members and staff of the IPA were deeply saddened to learn that Frank Budgen, the highly respected industry commercials director, has passed away.


Frank started his career as a copywriter at BBDO, before landing jobs at Saatchi & Saatchi and then BMP DDB Needham. He began directing commercials in 1985, starting with an ad for John Smiths, but parted ways with the agency world to work full-time behind the camera in 1991, when he joined The Paul Weiland Film Company. He then joined Gorgeous as a partner and an official co-founder in 1997.

Frank worked on a number of award winning adverts, scooping two Grand Prix at Cannes and multiple British Television Advertising Awards, British Television Craft Awards, and Advertising Creative Circle Awards. In 2012 he was recognised, jointly with Tony Kaye, as the industry’s “Most-Awarded Director” by D&AD.

His notable work includes:

  • ‘Mountain’ for PlayStation in 1999 which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004 and was the second most awarded advert of the year.
  • ‘Tag’ for Nike, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2002 and was voted one of the top 10 ads of the noughties in Campaign.
  • ‘Escape the Sofa’ for Reebok
  • ‘The Hero’s Return’ for Stella Artois

Details of a memorial service are yet to be announced.
