The IPA Legal Department deals with a variety of member enquiries on the law and regulation of marketing communications and employment law/HR in the UK (English Law and UK regulation). It also represents members and lobbies Government on issues and new legislation. From August 2010 led by commercial lawyer Richard Lindsay.

The IPA legal service is used by over 80% of IPA members. The team is led by Legal Director Richard Lindsay and includes Senior Legal Manager India Forsyth, Senior Legal Manager (Employment) Juliet Bawtree and Legal Associate Rebecca Chong.

The IPA is today notifying its members that, from 12th January 2012, companies will be able to create their own website domain suffixes, using almost any word and in any language.

Legal Alert on DCMS Letter (24 May) and ICO Guidance (25 May) on New Cookie Law - May 2011

As covered in the IPA’s legal alert of 20 May, the Department for Culture Media and Sport (“DCMS”) published a legal note to address concerns raised by industry about the implementation of the E-Privacy Directive into the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (“Regulations”) which deal with cookie use (and similar technologies). On 24 May, DCMS published a letter with the same purpose. Helpfully, the letter reiterates the points made in the legal note. Then, on 25 May, the Information Commissioner’s Office (“ICO”) published further guidance on how the new law will be implemented and enforced.
